No doubt, maintaining a sponsor-sponsee relationship can be a challenging task, but it can also be incredibly rewarding. As an employee, having a sponsor who advocates for your career advancement and helps to expand your professional network can be a game-changer. However, it takes more than just finding a sponsor to ensure success. Building a strong relationship with your sponsor requires effort, communication, and a clear understanding of expectations. Whether you’re just starting out in your career or looking to take your professional development to the next level, the tips that I will be sharing in this article will help you build a successful sponsorship relationship and achieve your career goals.

From Employee to Sponsored Success Story: My story

Moving up the corporate ladder is a dream for many employees. However, the journey to the top can be challenging, and it requires more than just hard work and dedication. Sponsorship is one of the most effective ways to advance your career, and it involves finding a senior executive who is willing to advocate for you and help you achieve your goals. How do I know? I was once an employee who benefitted from the kindness of one of my superiors, in advancing my career. As a young reporter, I would do my core duties of sourcing for news Stories, writing my reports and submitting reports, features and other news related materials to the editor, when one day, I was asked to feature in a radio show by one of the programmes managers in the radio station. Upon featuring in the programme, the senior programmes director who listened to the programme approached me and asked if I would like to feature in more of such programmes, because according to him, featuring in the programme brought out a side of me, that my every day news reporting duties never brought to the fore and I responded, ‘yes’ and from then he would include me in some radio productions, asked me to fill in when a newsreader was not available, and made me participate in programmes that show-cased my talents more. He continued to support me and advocated for me to become a programmes department staff, which led to me becoming a full-fledged Newsreader, programmes anchor, presenter and the host of many radio talk shows. His sponsorship massively helped me to progress my broadcasting career at the time.

Understanding the Differences between a Mentor and a Sponsor

Having a mentor and a sponsor in your corner is essential to your professional development because both roles are critical in career development. However, they serve different purposes. A mentor is someone who provides guidance and advice on career development. They are usually more experienced and knowledgeable in a particular field and can provide valuable insights on how to navigate the industry. Mentors may offer advice on how to improve your skills, expand your network, and identify new opportunities.

On the other hand, a sponsor is someone who is willing to advocate for you and help you advance your career. Sponsors are typically more senior in the organization and have the power and influence to provide you with new opportunities, connect you with influential people, and help you overcome obstacles. Unlike mentors, sponsors are not just advisors; they are active advocates for your career.

It is important to note that while mentors and sponsors can overlap, they are not the same. Mentors provide guidance, while sponsors provide opportunities and advocacy. Understanding the differences between these two roles is crucial when seeking the right support to advance your career.

Benefits of Having a Sponsor

Having a sponsor can provide significant benefits for your career growth. Some of the benefits include:

Access to New Opportunities

One of the most significant benefits of having a sponsor is access to new opportunities. Sponsors often have access to high-level executives, decision-makers, and industry influencers, which can open doors to new opportunities for you. They can help you get promoted, land a new job, or secure a critical project.

Increased Visibility

Sponsors can help increase your visibility within the organization and beyond. By advocating for you, they can help you get noticed by other influential people and decision-makers. This increased visibility can help you build your reputation, establish yourself as a leader, and enhance your credibility.

Enhanced Skill Development

Sponsors can also help you develop new skills and enhance your existing ones. By providing you with new opportunities, they can help you gain new experiences, expand your knowledge, and develop your expertise. This can make you more valuable to the organization and enhance your career prospects.

Boost your Confidence

Having a sponsor can also boost your confidence. Knowing that you have someone who believes in you and is willing to advocate for you can help you feel more confident in your abilities and more willing to take risks. This increased confidence can help you overcome obstacles and achieve your goals.

How to find a right Sponsor

Finding a sponsor can be challenging, but it is not impossible. Once you are clear on the qualities you want from a sponsor, you can then use these tips to find yourself the right sponsor:

Identify Potential Sponsors

The first step in finding a sponsor is to identify potential sponsors. Look for people who have the power and influence to help you advance your career. These can be senior executives, decision-makers, or influential people in your industry.

Build Relationships

Once you have identified potential sponsors, focus on building relationships with them. Attend networking events, participate in industry associations, and look for opportunities to connect with them. When you do connect, focus on building a genuine relationship based on mutual respect and trust.

Demonstrate Your Value

To attract a sponsor, you need to demonstrate your value. Show them that you are a high-potential employee who is committed to your career development. Highlight your achievements, skills, and experience, and let them know how you can contribute to the organization.

Be Proactive

Finally, be proactive in seeking out a sponsor. Don’t wait for someone to approach you; take the initiative to reach out to potential sponsors and ask for their support. Be clear about what you are looking for and why you think they would be a good sponsor for you.

Building a Strong Sponsor-Sponsee Relationship

Once you have found a sponsor, the next step is to build a strong sponsor-sponsee relationship. Here are some tips to help you build a productive and healthy relationship with your sponsor:

Communicate Clearly

Effective communication is key to building a strong sponsor-sponsee relationship. Be clear about your career goals, aspirations, and challenges. Share your successes and failures with your sponsor, and be open to feedback and advice.

Establish Expectations

Establish clear expectations for the relationship from the outset. Discuss what you hope to achieve, what kind of support you need, and how often you will meet. Agree on a timeline and set goals that you can work towards together.

Be Intentional

Don’t wait for your sponsor to take the lead. Be intentional and proactive in seeking out new opportunities, connecting with influential people, and advancing your career. Show your sponsor that you are clear about your goals and aspirations, express your commitment to your career development and show that you are willing to put in the effort to achieve your goals.

Show Gratitude

Finally, don’t forget to show gratitude to your sponsor. Thank them for their support, acknowledge their contributions, and keep them updated on your progress. Showing appreciation can help strengthen the relationship and demonstrate your commitment to the partnership.

Navigating the Sponsor-Sponsee Relationship

While sponsor-sponsee relationships can be highly beneficial, they can also be challenging to navigate. Here are some tips to help you navigate the relationship:

Be Flexible

Be flexible in your approach to the relationship. Recognize that your sponsor may have different priorities and commitments and may not always be available when you need them. Be understanding and work together to find a schedule and approach that works for both of you.

Be Respectful

Respect your sponsor’s time, expertise, and perspective. Don’t be afraid to challenge their ideas or offer your own perspective, but do so in a respectful and professional manner. Remember that your sponsor is investing their time and energy in your career, and showing them respect is essential.

Be Accountable

Take responsibility for your own career development. While your sponsor can provide support and advocacy, ultimately, it is up to you to make the most of the opportunities that they provide. Be accountable for your own progress and be willing to put in the effort to achieve your goals.

Be Patient

Finally, be patient. Building a strong sponsor-sponsee relationship takes time, effort, and commitment. Don’t expect immediate results and be willing to work through challenges and setbacks. With patience and perseverance, you can achieve your career goals and build a lasting relationship with your sponsor.

Be Open to Feedback

Be open to feedback and willing to learn. Listen to your sponsor’s advice and take it seriously. Use their feedback to improve your skills, enhance your knowledge, and develop your expertise.

Use your initiative

Take the initiative to seek out new opportunities and advance your career. Don’t wait for your sponsor to take the lead. Be proactive and show your sponsor that you are committed to your career development.

Be Professional

Ensure to always maintain a professional demeanour. Show respect to your sponsor, colleagues, and anyone else you interact with in the workplace. Be reliable, punctual, and follow through on your commitments.

Tips for Being an Effective Sponsor

Being an effective sponsor is just as important as being an effective sponsee. Here are some tips to help you be an effective sponsor:

Be Supportive

Be supportive of your sponsee and advocate for their career development. Provide them with new opportunities, connect them with influential people, and help them overcome obstacles.

Be Honest

Be honest with your sponsee. Provide them with constructive feedback, even if it is difficult to hear. Help them identify their strengths and weaknesses, and work with them to develop a plan to address any areas for improvement.

Be Accountable

Take responsibility for your role in the sponsorship. Be accountable for your commitments and follow through on your promises. Remember that your sponsee is relying on you to help them advance their career, and your commitment to the partnership is essential.

Common Mistakes to Avoid in Sponsor-Sponsee Relationships

While sponsor-sponsee relationships can be highly beneficial, there are some common mistakes to avoid, so as not to damage the relationship:

Overreliance on Your Sponsor

Avoid becoming too reliant on your sponsor. While they can provide support and advocacy, it is ultimately up to you to take responsibility for your own career development. So, don’t wait for you sponsor to always tell you what to do or constantly wait on you sponsor before taking other necessary career advancing steps.

Not Communicating Clearly

Effective communication is essential in the sponsor-sponsee relationship. Avoid misunderstandings by communicating clearly and regularly with your sponsor.

Failing to Show Gratitude

Showing gratitude to your sponsor is essential for building a strong relationship. Don’t forget to thank them for their support, acknowledge their contributions, and keep them updated on your progress.

Not Taking Feedback Seriously

Feedback is an essential part of the sponsor-sponsee relationship. Avoid making the mistake of not taking feedback seriously because this will only show that you are not committed to your goals and the opportunity extended to you and this may make you lose the opportunity. Listen to your sponsor’s advice and use it to improve your skills and advance your career.

Making the transition from being an employee to a sponsored success story can be a challenging and exciting journey. As an employee, you have a unique opportunity to achieve your goals and advance your career with the support of someone who believes in you, but to make the most of the sponsor-sponsee relationship, it’s important to remember that this is a two-way street, and you also have a role to play in the success of the relationship.

To create a win-win situation for you and your sponsor, stay committed to your goals, show appreciation to your sponsor, and always revisit your reasons for wanting to be sponsored, as this will continue to fuel your motivation to maximise the reward that you will get from sponsorship.
