What Is Black History Month?
Black History Month is a yearly commemoration that presents an opportunity to honour the achievements of Black individuals and acts as a reminder to confront and address systemic racism. The month-long event highlights the efforts of individuals and organisations working towards positive change and is observed by the United States, Canada, Ireland, and the United Kingdom.
When Is It Celebrated?
In the US, the designated month for observing Black History Month is February, and there’s an interesting reason behind it. The predecessor to Black History Month in the US dates back to 1926 when historian Carter G. Woodson established a week devoted to educating about Black history. This was arranged in February to overlap with the birthdays of two influential figures in the dissolution of slavery, Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglass. Over time, this week evolved into a month-long celebration and awareness campaign.
In the UK, on the other hand, Black History Month is celebrated in October. Although it draws inspiration from the American movement, its main focus lies on the experiences of Black people in Britain. The celebration was first observed in 1987 in London, organised by Akyaaba Addai-Sebo, a Ghanaian activist who also worked for the Greater London Council, and has since spread throughout the entire UK.
Why Is It Important?
Black History Month is a moment to recognise, respect, and rejoice in the rich and diverse history, accomplishments, and contributions of Black people. It is a month dedicated to acknowledging their struggles, triumphs, and cultural heritage. Through commemorating this significant month, we embrace the opportunity to deepen our understanding of the Black community and foster unity through shared narratives and experiences.
Black History Month guest speakers play a crucial role in enlightening audiences on these important topics. By sharing their insights, they contribute to a more inclusive and fair society.
